Geometer's Sketchpad for the Math Classroom

This professional development is designed to help high and middle school teachers become familiar and comfortable with Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP). We will point out uses and possible integrations of Geometer's Sketchpad. We will also collaborate on best practices when integrating this software.

Geometer's Sketchpad 5 was installed on a selected number of student computers. It is a program that offers transformable pictures, hot text, marker tool, and expanded algebra and geometric capabilities.

Geometer's Sketchpad for the High School Math Classroom (Not Just for Geometry)

Why use Geometer's Sketchpad?
Geometer's Sketchpad is a tool used to build, model, demonstrate, and graph mathematical concepts. Sketchpad increases students' understand giving them a visual representation of many math concepts that are difficult to visualize. It enables dynamic demonstrations by animating figures and making real-time calculations as figures change. It allows for students to see relationships between geometry and algebra. It not only offers geometry interactivity but everything from basic math through Calculus.

Why Use Geometer's Sketchpad? Video

Sketchpad allows students to visualize math concepts in ways that cannot be done on a two-dimensional sheet of paper. It also allows students to make discoveries by interacting with objects.

Some examples of relevant Sketchpad usage:
Exploring properties of operations, coordinates, solving equations, lines of best fit, measures of central tendency, and graph interpretations.
Help students to understand the concept of slope, equations of lines, exponents, parabolas, and conics.
Investigate sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, cotangent, sine inverse, cosine inverse, and tangent inverse function graphs.
Investigate constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, square root, cube root, absolute value, rational, natural log, and exponential functions. Parent functions and full form functions for modification are present.
Using it as a manipulative, such as algebra tiles.

: A fun math game that’s good for solidifying your sense of slope. The game works best with a partner (this is how it’s described), but you can also play it alone if you hide the labels and cover the slope measurements before dragging the lines.

Geometry example:
: If you connect each vertex of a triangle with a trisection point on the opposite side, you'll form a second triangle within the first. We'll investigate a relationship between the two triangles.

Another Example:
: Activity that shows relationships between the sides of a rectangle and the area of a rectangle.

Algebra Tile Example:
: Activity that uses algebra tiles to multiply binomials.
